Fun In The Sun
When it comes to swimming and skin care, there are a number of simple things you need to know to help make your long hours beside-and inside-your swimming pool safer and better for your skin.
In the Water
What affects your skin while submerged or swimming in pool water may surprise you. Contrary to popular belief, the chemical agents used in pool maintenance aren't generally the cause of dry skin one usually associates with being in the pool for long hours.
In fact, simple water is the likely culprit. Immersion in water for long periods of time tends to remove the thin, protective layer of oil in our skin that locks in moisture. Remember to apply a moisture-replenshing skin care lotion after extended hours in the pool, and be sure to drink lots of water to stay hydrated-not only at the beginning of the day, but throughout your time in the pool and in the sun.
In the Sun
The type of sunscreens you use make a big difference when outside (and in most cases, inside) the water; not only for preventing or soothing dry skin, but for protecting your skin from the harmful ultraviolet radiation present in sunlight. To keep a close eye on UV protection, follow these simple skin care tips:
- Choose a sunscreen that offers a factor of protection that is recommended for your skin type. In general, fairer skinned individuals need higher SPF protection.
- Pay close attention to product labels and follow instructions for reapplication.
- Apply sunscreen on all exposed areas of your body, and don't forget the tops of your feet and earlobes, two common areas skipped by bathers.
- Even waterproof sunscreens will lose their effectiveness over time-remember to follow the product directions
- Be sure your sunscreen blocks both UVA and UVB radiation. Both are wavelengths of harmful ultraviolet radiation that can be harmful to your skin
- For added protection, remember that UV rays are most intense between 11 AM and 3PM. Take frequent breaks from direct sunlight.
Remember, while skin care is important year round, summertime can be particularly hard on your skin. Take precautions when it comes to your summertime skin care both inside and outside the water, and you'll maximize your enjoyment and comfort for the whole season.
