Opening Your Kayak Pool
Everybody IN! Opening A Pool: 10 Basic Steps.
Swimming pools are unique additions to a location—so no set of pool opening procedures is likely to apply for all pools. We recommend you consult the materials provided by your pool manufacturer to safely and completely open the pool you’ve chosen
However, there are 10 steps that are common to MOST pool openings:
- Remove leaves, debris and water from the pool cover—use a skimmer net for the solids, and a submersible pump for the standing water.
- Inspect both filter and pump for damaged/worn parts, and allow time for changing or cleaning the filter if necessary.
- With the pool cover still on, fill the pool to proper level (to proper skimmer level).
- Filling the pool takes time. Use this time visit your supplier for new parts or media for the filter if necessary, and water-balancing chemicals you need for the season
- Remove the pool cover. Clean the cover and allow to air dry before rolling and storing. (a dusting of baby powder or talc before rolling the cover can help prevent mildew)
- Connect your circulation system per manufacturer’s instructions. Remove plugs and drain covers as necessary to ready your system.
- Scrub/long brush the sides of the pool. Vacuum debris from the bottom of the pool (a leaf bagger can be a handy assistant). Skim debris floating on the surface as well.
- Making certain your water in the pool is at the recommended level, turn on your circulation system to begin circulating the water. Do not run your system without water.
- After circulating the water for 3-4 hours, follow your manufacturer’s recommendations for testing pH and chlorine levels, and add the chemicals as needed. (Never combine or mix different types of chemicals prior to adding them to your pool)
- Once you’ve balanced your chemicals, be sure to let your circulation system run for an additional 3-4 hours before testing the water again. When all the chemicals are balanced, it’s time to swim!
Again, be sure to follow your pool and chemical manufacturer’s instructions for properly preparing and opening your pool, and never hesitate to consult your pool professional if you have any questions or concerns—they’re there to help!
