Preparing Your Pool for Vacation

It’s a fact that an unattended pool without a 3-way filtration system will not stay clear of debris and algae for very long. This can cause concern for people going on vacation.

Most above ground swimming pools require sufficient filtering, sanitization and balanced chemicals in the water to stay clean. If you are going on family vacation, or simply going on a trip for a few days, there are some things you can do to make sure the pool stays clean while you are gone. Here are a few things to think about before you leave the pool “home alone.”

Before you go, make sure to check…

Water level

If the level of your swimming pool goes down a significant amount during your absence, the filter will not operate properly. So before you leave, fill your pool with water at a level higher than you’d normally keep it. Adding a strong helping of swimming pool algaecide will help as well.

Solar Blankets And Pool Covers

Take your solar blanket off your pool before you leave. It will only heat your pool and reduce the effectiveness of your skimmer and system. Invest in a mesh pool cover for safety and place that cover on the pool before you leave. Having a safety cover on the pool not only keeps your pool clean while also increasing filtration and sanitation.

Filtration

Be sure NOT to turn the filter system off before you go away. The filtration system should run multiple hours each day. We recommend buying an automatic timer that will run your filter at least 8 hours per day. If you don’t have a filter, make sure someone can monitor the pool and filter in your absence.

Safety

The most important thing about leaving your pool unattended is safety. Each year, many people are injured while using a pool they’re not supposed to. We recommend getting a pool alarm and locking all gates and fences before you leave.
